Exercise of the Month – McGill Curl Up

Purpose:Increase abdominal strength and muscular endurance.

Benefit: This exercise is well-suited for people who are recovering from any surgery related to the pelvic floor or abdomen, including surgery due to prostate, pancreatic or ovarian cancer, or any abdominal surgery. It is a simple beginner exercise that’s safe for strengthening the abdominal pelvic floor.

Starting position: Begin lying on your back with one knee bent. Place both hands underneath low back with palms down.
Movement: Lift shoulders off floor, trying to maintain a neutral spine position without rounding low back. Do not allow the head to move forward of shoulders during movement. Lift elbows off floor during entire movement. Pause momentarily. Return to start position. Repeat for prescribed repetitions and sets.
